All About Comfort
Each individual in a home will experience comfort in different ways, but there are some things that universally impact comfort: temperature, humidity, and air movement.

Some of these property features are passive (they don’t require you to do anything) and some are active (they need you to make them work). Having these features in your home or incorporating these features into your renovation can give you more control over comfort and reduce your reliance on mechanical heating and cooling.

There are seven elements of passive design: orientation of the living rooms to north for solar access is the starting point. The other six elements – spatial zoning, thermal mass, ventilation, insulation, shading and glazing – can then be used to create homes that require minimal active heating or cooling.

For most of Australia
- For heating climates: cities such as Canberra and Melbourne
- For mixed climate: cities such as Sydney and Perth and Adelaide
- For cooling climates (with a high day/night temperature range – hot dry summer, cool winter): such as Brisbane, Alice Springs, Bourke
For the Top End of Australia
- For cooling climates (top end or tropical climates – hot humid summer, warm winter): such as Darwin, Broome and Cairns. This climate zone is more likely to experience wet seasons and dry seasons rather than winter and summer and the night temperatures will be very similar to the day temperatures.
